Three More Little Gripes With The iPod Touch
Filed Under Computers & Tech on October 14, 2007 at 1:11 am
At this stage I’ve run the Touch through everything I ever do with iPods and have found three additional annoyances to the ones I described in yesterday’s article. Two can be fixed by simple software updates, one cannot. None of these are show stoppers and don’t affect my over-all conclusion that this is a great iPod and a taste of the future.
- Poor Support for Older iPod Accessories – I recently bought an iPod compatible stereo thingy for the kitchen and the touch only half works with it. It charges and the sound comes out but the remote does not allow you to play/pause or go forward/back a track. Not the end of the world, but a bit annoying. I believe the iPhone suffers from the same problem.
- Long Names Don’t Scroll – On my previous iPod when ever it encounters a name that is too long to be displayed the name scrolls so you get to see all bits of it. This works in the menus and on the now-playing screen. The Touch does not do this and it’s a real PITA for audio books in multiple parts.
- No Sleep Timer – This probably only affects a few people but I normally fall asleep to my iPod so I set a 15 minute sleep timer on it. I can’t do that with the Touch so my old iPod now has a permanent place next to my bed 🙂
Update (26 October 2007): As Jon has pointed out in the comments below, you can get sleep functionality, just not in an immediately obvious way.

Hi Bart,
As licenced vendors pay apple 10% royalty for use of the dock connector my guess is that some of them will give Mr Jobs & co a hard time about the dock connector compatibility issues.
Have to say I’ve had my Touch a for smidge over 2 weeks now (http://philbridges.com/?p=109 ) and the benefits easily outweigh the niggles, many of which will probably come right in later firmware revisions. Oh, and have you had a chance to try out eye TV with the Touch yet ? – talk about Slingbox for free….. awesome!
Hi Phil,
I’m not really into TV so I don’t have an eye TV. I made the choice not to get TV in my new house and spend the money on faster broadband instead … four months on I simply don’t miss TV!
BTW, love the look of your blog.
Bart.
Hi, I found the sleep function you were looking for so you can make it Two More Little Gripes.
Go to ‘Clock’, ‘Timer’ on the bottom and then set the time you want, then where it says ‘When Timer Ends’ choose ‘Sleep iPod’.
Hope this helps.
Jon
Thanks Jon, that’s great! I’ve edited the post accordingly.

Is it safe to jailbreak your ipod touch?
I want to so bad but heard that it might freeze it up?Also whats the best sites to get ipod movies besides i tunes
Is it safe to jailbreak your touch? If you value your warranty then no, it is not. If you don’t then it probably is. The iPod Touch is no iPhone. There is no messing with modem firmware or anything like that here. It’s just tweaking the OS. If all goes wrong then in theory a restore should always get you back. However, in theory there is no difference between theory and practice but in practice there most certainly is!
Basically, it’s probably safe but you are still taking a risk.
